The Oxford Brookes Poetry Centre is excited to launch its 2019 International Poetry Competition to celebrate the power of poetry across the world!

Categories: Open and English as an Additional Language. Deadline: 2 September 2019 (23:00 BST/22:00 GMT). £1000 to winners.

The competition is open to both new and established poets aged 18 and over from across the globe and has two categories:

  • Open category (open to all poets aged 18 years and over)
  • English as an Additional Language (EAL) category (open to all poets aged 18 and over who write in English as an Additional Language)

The winners of each category will receive £1000 and both runners up £200.

We are absolutely delighted that this year's judge is the internationally-acclaimed and award-winning author Jackie Kay.

Jackie Kay was born and brought up in Scotland. The Adoption Papers (Bloodaxe) won the Forward Prize, a Saltire prize and a Scottish Arts Council Prize. Fiere was shortlisted for the Costa award and her novel Trumpet won the Guardian Fiction Award and was shortlisted for the IMPAC award. Red Dust Road (Picador) won the Scottish Book of the Year Award, and the London Book Award, and was shortlisted for the JR Ackerley Prize. Her third collection of short stories, Reality, Reality, was praised by The Guardian as ‘rank[ing] among the best of the genre'. She was awarded an MBE in 2006, and made a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2002. Her book of stories Wish I Was Here won the Decibel British Book Award. Jackie Kay also writes for children and her book Red Cherry Red (Bloomsbury) won the CLYPE award. She has written extensively for stage and television. Her plays, Manchester Lines (produced by Manchester Library Theatre) and The New Maw Broon Monologues (produced by Glasgay), were a great success. Her most recent collection, Bantam, was published in 2017 to critical acclaim. She is Chancellor of the University of Salford and Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University. Jackie Kay was named Scots Makar—the National Poet for Scotland—in March 2016.

The competition deadline is 11pm BST/10pm GMT on Monday 2 September 2019. It costs £5 to submit one poem or £4 per poem for more than three entries. Each poet can enter a maximum of ten poems. Please follow the instructions in the Oxford Brookes Shop. All entries must be unpublished work. Please read the full competition criteria and terms and conditions before entering.

There are two steps to entering the competition:

  1. Please visit the Brookes Shop and click on 'Book Event'. Then you can register as a new customer and pay for your entry/entries.

Federation University Australia (FedUni) carries out world-class research, as evidenced by the most recent Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) ranking with five-star ratings (well above world standard) in seven research areas.

The School of Science, Engineering and Information Technology produces leading research in these discipline areas including Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Geo-science and Information Technology. The School is keen to attract excellent postgraduate students to join our research teams through the provision of the Henry Sutton PhD Scholarship Awards.

Scholarship details: Twelve (12) International PhD Scholarships have been created for the School. Each scholarship will include a full Federation University Research Tuition Scholarship and a Stipend scholarship (which includes a cash stipend of $12,500 AUD per annum (paid fortnightly) plus an accommodation scholarship valued at $12,500 AUD per annum). Both the tuition and stipend scholarships will be provided for a period of three years. The Henry Sutton PhD Scholarship does not cover Overseas Student Health Cover (which is compulsory for the period of the COE).

In addition, the scholarship holders may be offered optional paid teaching opportunities within the School.

Project support: $2000 per year to support the cost of the project (approved research expenses only).

Eligibility: Honours 1 or equivalent is preferred. Open to International applicants, with the specification that International applicants must hold current IELTS or TOEFL English test results that meet minimum University English Language proficiency requirements.

Conditions of Scholarship: These scholarships are for a period of three years. Application is open to new International students only. Standard leave entitlements apply. This position and scholarship are full-time, with no possibility of being undertaken part-time during candidature. Students will be required to commit to a minimum of four days per week on campus and participate in occasional industry placement at key times during the term of their candidature.

Location: Successful candidates may elect to be located at either Ballarat, postcode 3350 or Gippsland campus, postcode 3842.

Individual Fellowships (IF) are a great option if you are an experienced researcher looking to give your career a boost by working abroad. They offer exciting new learning opportunities and a chance to add some sparkle to your CV.

TYPES OF INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIPS

There are two types of Individual Fellowships:

  • • European Fellowships
  • • Global Fellowships

European Fellowships:

  • • are open to researchers moving within Europe, as well as those coming in from other parts of the world.
  • • can restart a research career after a break, such as parental leave.
  • • can help researchers coming back to Europe find a new position.

These Fellowships are held in the EU or associated countries and last for one to two years.

Global Fellowships

  • • fund positions outside Europe for researchers based in the EU or associated countries.
  • • last between two and three years.
  • • the researcher has to come back for one year to an organisation based in the EU or associated countries.

Both types of Fellowship can also include a secondment period of up to three or six months in another organisation in Europe.

WHO CAN APPLY?

This action is for experienced researchers from across the world.

Applicants need a doctoral degree or at least four years’ full-time research experience by the time of the call deadline.

WHAT CAN BE FUNDED?

All research areas can be funded. MSCA Fellows come from a wide variety of disciplines – from physics to linguistics, and from health-sciences to mathematical modelling.

WHAT THE FUNDING COVERS

The grant provides an allowance to cover living, travel and family costs. In addition, the EU contributes to the training, networking and research costs of the fellow, as well as to the management and indirect costs of the project. The grant is awarded to the host organisation, usually a university, research centre or a company in Europe.

HOW DO I APPLY?

You submit a research proposal, including your CV. The proposal is written jointly with your chosen host organisation(s).

The Future For Nature Award is a prestigious international award that celebrates tangible achievements in protecting wild animal and plant species.

The Future For Nature Award aims to:

  • • Reward and fund individuals for their outstanding efforts in the protection of species of wild animals and plants
  • • Stimulate Award winners to sustain their dedicated work
  • • Help winners to raise their profile, extend their professional network and strengthen their funding basis

The Award provides the winners international recognition, financial support and reinforced linkages to an international conservation network.

In addition to the Award amount, all recipients receive a small Future For Nature sculpture,

The following criteria must be met to be eligible to apply and will be used in the selection procedure for the Future For Nature Award winners. The candidate:

  • - Must be born on or after the 30th April 1984 and before the 30th of April 2002;
  • – Has achieved a substantial and long-term benefit to the conservation status of one or more animal and/or plant species or for a specific population of one or more animal and/or plant species;
  • – Has demonstrated commitment, determination, and passion for conservation work;
  • – Has demonstrated leadership and entrepreneurship in his/her conservation work;
  • – Has been creative and innovative in his/her work;
  • – Has demonstrated to be (cost) effective and integer in the conservation work performed;
  • – Must be determined to continue his/her conservation work, as the Award aims to stimulate the winner’s future work. It is not an “end of career” prize;
  • – Is proficient in English to be able to reach a large audience.

The award should be used for a conservation project of the winner’s own choice, initiated and implemented by him/her. The focus of the project must be on conservation of species and the project can involve a component of (fundamental) research, but this should not be the main focus. The main focus should be conservation action with a practical impact. Project descriptions should substantiate the relevance of the proposed activities to species conservation.

Awards

Winners will present their work at the Future For Nature Award event at Royal Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The event will take place in May 2020. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Future For Nature Foundation.

The award is EUR 50,000.

Are you interested in the topic and youth work, but have never done it before? Either way we invite you to apply! We value diversity of backgrounds, experiences and work fields. Citizenship is not a precondition. Since the training is going to be held in English, a good level of English is required.

What? Entangled History is an international training where you can meet people from Germany, Poland and Ukraine interested in Holocaust Education and new approaches and methods of non-formal education, encourages its participants to develop and work on their own educational methods and offers to publish them in a methodological handbook, offers its participants an insight into the work of well-established institutions of non-formal educational youth work.

You will learn how: To use practical methods of non-formal education to approach such a serious topic as the Holocaust To bring together different perspectives on the same historical event To develop personal connections to such a topic with young people through family history To reflect critically upon historical education To develop critical thinking and grow awareness of the existence of more than one historical truth Summary of the project "Entangled History as a perspective for non-formal education" is a training for 18 multipliers of youth work from Germany, Poland and Ukraine. During the training participants will meet in order to learn and modify methods for the historical and civic non-formal education viewed in the context of a growing diversity in our societies. Due to globalization and migration our societies in Europe become more and more diverse. The field of non-formal education must take this challenge and needs to integrate this diversity into its project formats. Old narratives needs to be uncovered and views from multiple perspectives on historical events have to be included. The Holocaust as a focal point will be examined from multiple perspectives and conclusions on marginalized groups and discrimination in our current societies will be drawn from that. Further goals of the project are the consolidation of tolerance, giving an impulse on critical thinking as well as raising awareness towards diversity and against discrimination. During the training participants get the chance to develop and modify methods that can be applied in the following international youth meeting (23.-28.02.2020) as well as in the everyday work of the youth workers.

The Chemistry Department at Sussex is delighted to offer the Professor Colin Eaborn Chemistry Scholarship to students who have achieved excellent academic results prior to joining the University and who maintain academic excellence throughout their Chemistry degree.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • • Be an undergraduate student taking up a place in Year 1 of a degree in the Chemistry department, in 2019
  • • Have achieved AAA (or equivalent) with at least an A in Chemistry prior to joining Sussex
  • • Have made Sussex your Firm choice of university via UCAS

To continue to be eligible for this scholarship throughout your degree you must maintain an overall average of at least 70% in each year of your degree. If you do not receive the scholarship in Year 1 or you do not meet the required threshold to maintain the scholarship during your studies, it is not possible to receive it in subsequent years.

If you are studying Chemistry (with an Industrial Placement Year) MChem or Chemistry with Summer Research Placements MChem you will not receive maintenance payments during your year in industry/abroad.

The Helmut Veith Stipend is dedicated to the memory of an outstanding computer scientist who worked in the fields of logic in computer science, computer-aided verification, software engineering, and computer security. Helmut Veith, who tragically passed away in March 2016, was a strong advocate and mentor for women in computer science.

In honor of Helmut Veith’s efforts, a stipend for outstanding female students in computer science was established with support of TU Wien, the Wolfgang Pauli Institute, and generous donations of friends and colleagues of Prof. Veith. Students who are awarded a scholarship receive EUR 6000 annually (paid in installments), and tuition fees are waived.

Eligibility

The Helmut Veith Stipend is awarded annually to outstanding female students in the field of computer science who pursue (or plan to pursue) one of the master’s programs in Computer Science at TU Wien taught in English. Applicants must be eligible for admission to a master’s program in Computer Science taught in English at TU Wien (currently Logic & Computation and Business Informatics; European Master´s Program Computational Logic for the duration of the recipient’s studies at TU Wien, Computer Engineering (Technische Informatik), Media and Human-Centered Computing, and Data Science). While applications for funding can be filed before or in parallel with the admissions process, the funding will only be awarded to applicants who have been unconditionally admitted to the master’s program. An application for funding does not replace the admissions process; neither does a conditional offer of funding entitle the applicant to study at TU Wien.

Female students who meet the following conditions are eligible to apply for the stipend:

  • • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Mathematics (Bologna first cycle) or equivalent degree
  • • Extensive knowledge and interest in (at least one of) Helmut Veith’s areas of research:
  • • Logic in Computer Science
  • • Formal Methods and Verification
  • • Foundations of Artificial Intelligence
  • • Complexity Theory
  • • Computer Security
  • • Proficiency in English

Conditions

  • • Recipients of funding must be committed to demonstrate good progress during their studies, i.e.:
  • • obtain at least 25 ECTS credits from the respective master’s curriculum per term on average since the beginning of their master’s studies (the deadlines are April 30 for the winter term and November 30 for the summer term), and
  • • achieve a grade average of at most 1.5.
  • • Recipients of funding have to reside in Austria during term time for the duration of their studies. Exceptions and temporary interruptions of the stay during term time (e.g., for internships or research visits) are subject to approval.
  • • The stipend is provided for the duration of the master’s program (subject to the conditions listed above), for up to 2 years.

  • • Cover Letter, describing the type of funding the student is applying for, and all other aspects the student deems relevant for the application
  • • Curriculum Vitae
  • • Motivation Letter, describing the reasons why the student wants to study in the program Logic and Computation, why funding is necessary, and with which groups of the faculty the student would be interested to work with during their master’s thesis and why.
  • • Reports on university examinations (transcripts)
  • • Diplomas and/or certificates (first degree, bachelor degree, or higher). If the final academic certificate is not yet available at the time of the application deadline, a preliminary certificate (indicating the type of degree and the expected graduation date) signed and stamped by the degree-awarding university must be provided.
  • • Contact details of two referees (for letters of recommendation)
  • • English language certificate (TOEFL or similar)
  • • Copy of passport

IIE MSA Scholarships

IIE MSA is committed to providing learning opportunities for the highest achieving students. To recognize our high-achieving students who are dedicated to excelling academically, by offering scholarships each year.

Total value of the award:

A total of 25% – 100% of your annual fees are paid. The award does not cover textbooks, stationery, printing costs, living expenses or any traveling costs. Payments are in the form of an automated credit note to your tuition fee account after the release of your module results. No cash is transferred to the students’ personal bank account.

Selection:

  • • Based on academic achievement and offered to the highest achieving South African and International students
  • • Current IIE MSA students with a minimum overall programme General Point Average (GPA) of 3.3 and above
  • • Commencing students with an Achievement Level of 40 and above.

Take note, although you might meet the eligibility criteria your application will be part of an in- depth selection process before final scholarship awards are issued. Many applications are received each semester. As a result, applicants compete with peers for the limited available number of scholarships.

Eligibility:

  • • Be enrolled or have received an offer to enroll as a full-time student at IIE MSA in a Higher Certificate, the Foundation Programme or an undergraduate course of study leading to a higher education award.
  • • Not be a recipient of any other financial support award.
  • • Be studying Year 12 or equivalent (South Africa citizen) or be studying in the final year of secondary school or equivalent (international); or
  • • Be a current IIE MSA student and have completed a minimum of one semester of study at IIE MSA.
  • • Be able to demonstrate that the additional costs of textbooks, stationery, printing costs, living expenses and travelling costs can be covered at the student’s own cost.

Not eligible:

  • • Successful candidates receiving a scholarship are not eligible for other discounts in addition to this financial award.

The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional (flame, plasma, twin-wire arc, HVOF) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low pressure plasma spray. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro-metrology, as well as technical consulting. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write (aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing) and metal additive (powder bed and LENS). A postdoc position is now available to work with Dr. Shizhong Han, Associate Professor, in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins. Research in Dr. Han’s lab has been focused on investigating the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders, and developing statistical genetic approaches and computational tools that will facilitate the effort to identify disease susceptibility genes more broadly. The candidate is expected to work with Dr. Han to develop and apply machine learning and network-based approaches to risk gene identification, disease risk prediction, and drug discovery for psychiatric disorders. Research projects will include: 1) integration of multi-omics datasets including GWAS, RNA-Seq and Chip-Seq to identify causal genes and noncoding variants underlying several major psychiatric disorders; 2) biomarker discovery for treatment response; 3) personalized risk gene inference; and 4) drug repurposing for psychiatric disorders. Candidates with a doctoral degree in human genetics, bioinformatics, or other fields with strong quantitative skills (e.g., biostatistics, statistics, or computer science) will be considered. Strong programing skills in Perl/Python and R are essential. Experiences with large-scale genetic or genomic datasets are necessary. Experiences with network-based approach or machine learning are a plus. The candidates need to be highly motivated, excellent in academic writing, and able to work well in a collaborative environment.

Berkeley Lab's Physics Division has an opening for a ATLAS Postdoctoral Scholar to work in the Berkeley Lab's (LBNL) ATLAS software group that leads the development of Athena, the application framework of the ATLAS collaboration at CERN, with a focus on enabling concurrency on modern heterogeneous architectures and on optimizing High Performance Computing (HPC) workflows. The Postdoctoral Scholar will collaborate between the Physics and Computing Research Divisions.

What You Will Do:

  • • Collaborate with ATLAS physicists and computer scientists to design and implement coprocessor support in Athena, the ATLAS framework.
  • • Research and development in resource scheduling and in efficient data access.
  • • Develop distributed and parallel ATLAS analysis workflows on HPC systems like NERSC9 (Perlmutter) including the training of Machine Learning models on ATLAS datasets.
  • • Research in Computational Physics, from data-driven pattern recognition algorithms, to post-Moore architectures (including neuromorphic and quantum systems), from data analytics on HPC, to new algorithms and software for simulation parameter tuning.

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) is recruiting a Software Developer to join the Laboratory of Digital and Computational Demography.

The Profile

The Laboratory of Digital and Computational Demography, headed by MPIDR Director Emilio Zagheni, is looking for candidates with a background in Software Development/Software Engineering, who will support scientific projects at MPIDR and collaborate closely with researchers on their implementation.

Candidates are expected to have a solid knowledge of, and relevant experience with, at least some of the following: (i) low/mid-level programming languages (e.g., C, C++, C#, Java), (ii) high-level languages commonly used in the scientific community (e.g., Python and R) and related statistical/data science libraries, (iii) Web Development (Front-end and Back-end, APIs e.g. Facebook Marketing API), (iv) Mobile Application Development (Android, IOS), (v) Data Management (SQL) and High Performance Computing.

A PhD in Computer Science, Informatics or a related discipline (or equivalent level of experience) is desirable. The successful candidate will work with an international team of scientists that are advancing the field of digital and computational demography. Her/his profile should include: (i) excellent communication skills, including high proficiency in written and spoken English; (ii) the ability to work in teams and to support the full life cycle of scientific projects from a software development perspective; (iii) an interest in deepening and expanding relevant knowledge and skills, and in coauthoring research articles or reports.

The Position and Remuneration

The position is full time (39 hours/week), to start as soon as possible. The contract is initially limited to 2 years, with the possibility of tenure. The MPIDR offers a competitive salary that starts at approx. 54,000 EUR gross per year depending on relevant experience (pay scale 14 TVöD Bund). Remuneration is based on the salary structure of the German public sector and includes employees’ benefits in accordance with the rules of federal employees in Germany.

Advanced Photonics Research (APR) Lab at School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore is seeking “TWO” candidates for postdoctoral research fellow positions in the field of “Silicon Photonics & 2D-Material Optoelectronics”. Department Description:

The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional (flame, plasma, twin-wire arc, HVOF) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low pressure plasma spray. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro-metrology, as well as technical consulting. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write (aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing) and metal additive (powder bed and LENS). Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.

This is an exciting PhD opportunity to work will various companies throughout Europe. Applications are invited for one full-time PhD studentship funded by the EU at Brunel University London. Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend of £17,002 plus payment of their full-time home/EU tuition fees, £4,260 per annum, for a period of 36 months. Partial scholarships are provided for international students with funding up to £20,813 per annum for three years. International fees for 2018/19 are £18,000 per annum. The studentship will commence ASAP.

BCAST is a specialty research institute focusing on solidification related research with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering (the Future LiME Research Hub). Our research covers fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in the field of solidification and materials processing. The LightMe Project is an €11M EU Horizon 2020 project that involves over 20 partners throughout Europe. The successful candidate for this position will work in a larger team on the development of a pilot line for high pressure die cast aluminium and magnesium nanocomposite components. The research will focus on modelling and numerical simulation. This will require model development to adapt the existing casting models to the specific properties and solidification behaviour of nanocomposites. The work will also include: (1) modification of the pilot line to produce industrial scale castings; (2) optimisation of the casting process (3) evaluation of the mechanical properties of the final components. He/she will also be expected to work collaboratively with other members of the research group, and collaborate with and travel to other partners throughout Europe in order to contribute to the success of the project.

Eligibility

Successful candidates are required to have a first degree at or equivalent to 2:1 or above in a suitable engineering discipline, e.g. mechanical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, chemistry, physics, etc. A Master’s level qualification is desirable but not essential. Experience in numerical modelling, processing of metallic materials, skills in microstructural characterisation using various microscopy techniques and a working knowledge of mechanical testing of metallic materials is an advantage. In addition, he/she should be highly motivated, able to work in a team and have good communication skills.
